Emotional Motions

Love and trauma, you can completely lose yourself in them, yet they’re just as hard to escape, both personally and philosophically. That’s exactly what the anti-disciplinary collective Pensive Vivifier, made up of artists Janne Kosmos, Tes Wolters Bos, and Silva Westera, aims to explore in Emotional Motions, the exhibition that opens on July 11 at 8:00 PM.

With their layered, non-conformist, and overwhelming collage style, Pensive Vivifier has been setting music venues, theaters, and exhibition spaces in motion for several years now. Drawing inspiration from concepts surrounding the Last Universal Common Ancestor (LUCA), this year they’re placing the theme of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) front and center. They mix this with influencer slob and pop-science YouTube clips to brew their own cocktail of psychedelic effects and AI-enhanced statements, that manages to hit both head and heart.

Emotional Motions is their first and with that also their largest video installation. It will be on view all summer at MU, and their approach is a breath of fresh air. By diving in headfirst, both fiercely and with complete vulnerability, the artists seek not only discomfort and helplessness, but also joy and energy. For themselves, and for everyone who recognizes themselves in their queerness.

Last year, Pensive Vivifier won the Fringe at Best award at Frascati with their performance Love is Abundant, which usually ends with a dance party on stage involving the audience. This year, they have been given carte blanche for a new Fringe project, and Emotional Motions is serving as a fitting testing ground. Through try-outs at MU, they’ll be preparing in late August and early September for the new performance season.
